The design of the Temperance/Venus Rosewater Basin is a masterpiece of storytelling. It is embellished with figures from classical mythology, with the central figure being Temperance (Venus) holding a wine cup. Four plaques depict figures representing air, water, earth, and fire circling around the central figure. Oval panels on the rim illustrate the Seven Liberal Arts – Grammar, Reason, Rhetoric, Music, Arithmetic, Geometry, and Astrology – and their patron Minerva. The front of the basin is no less intricately constructed, with layers of metal filigree that provide immense depth and space. The original Temperance Basin was made by François Briot around 1585 and was acquired by the V&A in 1855. The most notable reproduction is the silver gilt Wimbledon Ladies Singles Championship trophy made by Elkington and Co in 1864, which has been presented at every championship since. This 19th century example of the basin is produced from copper and silver plated. Through age the warmth of the copper is showing through the plate and there is light surface wear. Diameter: 44.5 cm. There are two sets of antique oval lidded silver plated metal vegetable serving bowls/ dishes. Beautiful English work of the late 19th, early 20th century style and taste, Louis XV Louis XVI Richly decorated with pearl friezes and acanthus leaves with a tinge of gold plate. The borders are with chiselled round motifs. Removable handle with pearl pattern allows the lid to be used as a second vegetable dish or other serving utensils. Maker’s marks show TW & Co engraved. One set is marked 1, second set marked 4. Also some kind of signature under the handle when handle is removed. These vegetable bowls are in very good condition, some signs of wear, some tarnish, some lack of silvering at bottom, no shocks, no deep scratches. Overall very good condition. Lovely, vintage, tea set with tilting pot from Birmingham Silver Co/ BSC. The set includes coffee pot, tilting teapot, sugar bowl, creamer and waste bowl. Each serving piece has scrolling leaves on the handles and feet, grapes and leaves around the middles of all the bodies (except for the tilting pot), bulbous shaped bodies, the tilting pot has very slight reticulation (see pic) and topped with grapes and leaves finials. The tilting pot comes with a working spirit burner. Beautiful, sturdy and heavy set. Tea/Coffee pot measure approx 11″ tall x 11″ wide, tilting pot 15″ tall on the stand (10″ tall not on the stand) x 10 wide handle to spout. Sugar bowl approx 8″ tall, creamer approx 6 1/2″ tall, waste bowl 5 tall. Marks: Makers mark for Birmingham Silver Co (crown with BSC) and silver on copper. This set appears to be in good vintage condition. May have signs of age and use such as light surface scratches, possible tarnish, tiny bruises. Insides are clean with light staining, if any.
