Rare 1920s Holton C Soprano Saxophone – Beautiful Silver Plate, Keys To High F! Soprano saxophones in C arent commonly seen these days, but they are wonderful instruments. Their tone is very similar to Bb sopranos, but as non-transposing instruments they can easily read piano/vocal/violin/flute/oboe/etc. The star attraction here might appear to be the full key range to high F, which is very difficult to find on a C soprano. The Holtons were the only C sopranos built in the 1920s with standard keywork all the way up to high F, while Conn and Buescher C sopranos are only keyed to high Eb. Thats not its only attractive feature however – it has a marvelously sweet and rich tone, and feels like a great fit for playing in any style of music Ive played with it – various eras of classical, jazz, and rock, klezmer, Irish folk music, Balkan music – it always seems to be at home in any musical genre Ive tried it in. This instrument has been owned and played by a professional saxophonist (me) for the past 10 years and has been kept in a smoke-free home. It was overhauled and repadded shortly before I bought it and it still plays quite well overall, but it would benefit from a little attention from a repair person – the lowest several notes dont speak very easily, so Im sure there are a few leaks to fix. Pads seem pretty good overall though. When its in top shape its great player, noticeably better than the several other C sopranos Ive played over the years. Its Low Pitch, so its A=440 modern pitch. And at almost 100 years old, its certainly in a lot better shape than I will when Im that age! Ive always liked this one a lot, but Im simply not using it much these days – so its time for someone else to enjoy it rather than such a wonderful instrument being neglected.
