Offered is this elegant silver plate 2-quart tilting water pitcher. This water pitcher was made in Meriden, Connecticut, by Wilcox. The patent date on the pitcher is 1878. This highly decorated piece of Victorian quadruple plate would have been a luxury item in its day. The insulated pitcher is lined with a white enamel inset. When filled with ice and water, the pitcher would keep the ice frozen for several hours, providing chilled water all day. Since not everyone during this time period could afford ice, only more affluent families could use this product. An elaborate floral design is molded into the thumb rest on the pitcher. Bands of decorated overlapping circles appear at the rim and base of the pitcher. The stand has the same band of overlapping circles. The handles extend upward from the base, with the bottom part resting on the heads of two griffins, mythological creatures with savage talons and beaks with dramatic plumage. Again, look carefully at the close-up photos. The griffins appear on both sides of the base. The handles also have elaborate designs. They make for easy carrying when the pitcher is full. By itself, the pitcher weighs 8 pounds. With all pieces in place, the water set weighs 16 pounds. When you add water, it is even heavier. The height of the water pitcher is about 14 inches (35.5 cm).
