A lot of gorgeous and timeless designs in jewelry came out of this period. Jewelry from this period was most often crafted between 1920 and 1940. Art Deco jewelry sometimes featured white gold or platinum, geometric designs, European cut diamonds, filigree, and calibre cut stones that are specifically cut to fit the design of the piece. During the Art Deco period jewelers often made jewelry upon custom order, this would often take weeks to months to completely craft by hand. Chinese export jewelry became popular during the late Victorian period and persisted until the 1960s. During this period, Chinese craftsmen were considered by far the best in the world. The rich and wealthy would custom-order a piece through their local jeweler, who would send the design off to China to be made and sent back to Europe. This lengthy process was very expensive, making Chinese export pieces highly desirable, then and now. Chinese stone cutters were considered some of the finest artisans in the world. They would spend years learning to hand-carve many different types of stones, and excelled in creating finely detailed pieces other artisans couldnt even hope to compare to. Their skill was so refined that they could even carve delicate stones like coral and jade. Chinese stone cutters were so talented that Victorian era European socialites would commission pieces from them, preferring the hefty price tag that came with such high quality work to the ready availability of Western stonework. Chinese turquoise is considered a very valuable stone by the Chinese, second only to jade. In fact, Chinese Turquoise was often used to supplement or replace jade. Chinese turquoise was highly prized for its rarity and gorgeous, bright blue hues. Stones that exhibit a spiderweb matrix are quite rare and deeply coveted. Chasing is a metalworking technique that uses a nail-like tool and hammer to hand etch patterns onto a metal surface. This process creates a design that is sunk into the front of the surface using indentations, grooves, and channels. Chasing is thousands of years old and was very difficult and time-consuming technique that is still used by metalsmiths today. Please take this into consideration before. Filigree metalworking is a delicate form of art and has been found as early as 3,000 BC in Mesopotamia. It was perfected by the Phoenicians and Etruscan civilizations between the 6th and 3rd centuries BC. It involves stamping out a design in metal and hand bending and twirling threads, combined with tiny beads, until a final motif emerges. It is reminiscent of lace and considered one of the most difficult metalworking processes. Filigree is still a very popular technique in India and Asia. Repoussé began as an ancient metalworking technique dating as far back as the 3rd century BC, involving malleable metal that was hammered onto the reverse side to create an image on the front. Examples are found all over the world; Greece, Egypt, and even the Hopewell periods in the American southeast. Reverse side hammering was also used to add detail to the front, creating intricate patterns using grooves, indentations, and channeling. The piece was then carefully polished to create a hollow, eye-catching treasure. Please take this into consideration before. A festoon, by definition, is a garland of flowers, ribbons, or leaves hung in a curve as a decorative element or incorporated as an architectural feature. Thus, a necklace must have swags or drapes of chain, beads, or metal findings as part of the design. The festoon necklace became popular during the Georgian period and carried over into the Victorian era, with some more elaborate fashionable (not meant for mourning) black necklaces made during this period incorporating swags of jet beads. Bohemian garnets and other materials were also used. Festoon necklaces were popular during the Edwardian era as well, with a return to more delicate chains in the designs or elements reflecting garland style with ribbons, flowers and bows. Articulated pieces of jewelry are usually composed of two or more pieces connected by a flexible joint, hinge, or pivot to allow for realistic movement. Agate is a type of translucent microcrystalline quartz. It comes in many different colors including white, red, black, yellow, brown, or pink. Agate forms when silica from groundwater deposits into the cavities of igneous rocks. Different compositions of groundwater create different colors of agate. Agate gemstones have been used for thousands of years and are commonly found rings, pendants, necklaces, and beads. Some are even made into small sculptures! Enameling originally dates all the way back to the ancient Persians of Meenakari. The technique involves bonding powdered glass to a base, usually gold, by firing (heating and melting the glass onto the metal). The glass hardens to form a layer of pigment over the metal. Enamel is made of colored powdered glass or may include clear powdered glass that is mixed with colorful metallic pigments. It was used by the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Celts; and later the Chinese and Georgians. It resurged in popularity in the 20th century. It is primarily used on decorative art or jewelry, usually small in size. Besides jewelry, enamel can also be applied to glass, ceramic, stone, and various other materials. Filigree metal working is a delicate form of art has been found as early as 3,000 BC in Mesopotamia. It was perfected by the Phoenicians and Etruscan civilizations between the 6th and 3rd centuries BC. It involves stamping out a design in metal and hand bending and twirling threads, combined with tiny beads, until a final motif emerges. It is reminiscent of lace and considered one of the most difficult metal working processes. The Art Deco era is famous for being the “Gatsby” or “Roaring Twenties” era. The opera length necklace was very fashionable formal evening wear for high class ladies during the Art Deco period. Opera length is 26 – 35 inches long. It can be worn several ways; single strand with a higher neck line or doubled to create a choker effect. Traditionally, opera length necklaces are worn with evening wear, although using them to accessorize more casual attire has become a fresh, cutting-edge fashion statement. Amethysts are a semi-precious variety of quartz that are valued for their varying shades of translucent purple hues. The purple color is derived from iron and other trace element deposits. Throughout antiquity, amethysts were used in religious and royal jewelry, and were considered as valuable as rubies, emeralds, and even sapphires. Please take this into consideration before.
