Vtg 1930s Art Deco Silver Filigree Rhodium Plate Glass Enamel Flower Necklace
While this Art Deco necklace has a modest silhouette and an airy feel when worn, it has a vibrant and cheery impact. The thin filigree pendants are accented with sweet floral enameling that alternate with shimmering leafy-green colored glass cabs. Oval with a full-sized shape, the glass is open at the back and faceted on both sides for the maximum amount of light and sparkle. This piece is fresh looking and must have been tucked away and well. Taken care of, the signs of wear are noticeable only on close inspection. The setting has a fresh and bright patina with no dents or misshapen spots and minor surface wear. The glass is smooth and gleaming with no chipping or surface wear and the faceting is crisp and distinct. The enameling is bright and dense without any chipping or thinning. There are no irregularities to the setting or signs of solder or repair and the piece has a firm shape. Width Just under 1/2. Material Alloy does not test for silver or gold content, Glass. Figural jewelry includes any piece that has been shaped into an animal, person, object, or detailed day in the life scene. Antique and vintage figural jewelry is often quite charming and collectible for the realistic or cutesy details. Specific objects or animals became popular and prolific in jewelry during certain time periods, Scotty dogs during the 1940s for example, or swallow birds during the Victorian era. Figural jewelry is special for its detail and realism but also tells the story of the decade they were made in. There are several different styles of enameling: guilloche (colored, transparent enamel over a metal surface with geometric grooves), champlevé (enamel fills etchings or depressions in a metal surface), plique a jour (translucent enamel fitted into open-back metal cells) and more. What makes antique or vintage enamel pieces collectible is the condition of the enamel workis it distinct and vibrant? Is it free from chips? Other characteristics like an elaborate pattern, unique depiction, or the use of multiple colors can add more value to an enamel pieces. _gsrx_vers_1233 GS 8.1.1 (1233). Art Deco jewelry sometimes featured white gold or platinum, geometric designs, European cut diamonds, filigree, and calibre cut stones that are specifically cut to fit the design of the piece. During the Art Deco period jewelers often made jewelry upon custom order, this would often take weeks to months to completely craft by hand. A Grand Tour was an opportunity for travelers to learn more about the art, cultures, and histories of other countries, often lasting months or years at a time. This necklace is defined by three different types of beads that are strung along the white string that holds the many strands together. There are five strands total that make up this hefty necklace, each adorned with sterling silver plated beads, resin, and faux turquoise. The faux turquoise is a lovely opaque light blue and makes up the majority of the beads in the center of the necklace. To either side of the faux turquoise beads is sterling silver plated beads, and beyond those strung carved resin beads. The resin beads are beige in color, a lovely contrast against the blue of the faux turquoise. Finally, immediately next to both sides of the clasps finishing the necklace are more sterling silver plated beads. The slider pendant is a large contoured tube. The edges of the tube are lined with applied rope twist accents and in the center of the tube is an applied rosette accent. Completing the necklace is a large, sterling silver plated hook clasp for comfortable and secure wear of this substantial piece of jewelry. This necklace has a wearable length of 26.50. When worn, this necklace falls to the top of the bust, the many strands separating slightly to highlight the grandeur of this necklace. Don’t miss your chance to preserve this piece of cultural history. Damage: Age appropriate wear. The beads are somewhat damaged, which is not unusual for an item of this necklace’s age. Some beads are most likely missing, revealing the string underneath. The sterling silver plating is somewhat tarnished, which adds to the character of this item. The price has been reduced to reflect this. This listing is for the item only. This was very true due to the gorgeous designs that came out of this period. This era focused on women and the beauty of nature and the pieces were often large. Enamel was a common material used in Art Nouveau jewelry as the period was more about the importance of the design over the materials used to create it. The Art Nouveau period happened before the start of the first World War, when mass manufacturing took over the production of many products, including some jewelry. The Grand Tour was the standard European vacation of the Georgian and Victorian eras. The opportunity it gave for studying culture, architecture and art made it a tradition, especially for the upper classes. The Grand Tour was popularized by the poet Lord Byron and the writer Mary Shelley, who was the author of Frankenstein. The Grand Tour was an opportunity for wealthy travelers to explore the world and experience different cultures over a 2 to 4-year period. And what better memento of this long trip than pieces of native souvenir jewelry such as Italian cameos, mosaic, and pietra dura. Pieces often had historical inspirations from the remnants of Pompeii to the pyramids of Egypt. Cultural learning was a focal point of the grand tour and the process of remembrance spilled over into jewelry souvenirs. Turquoise is found all over the world and has been a popular semi-precious stone used in jewelry and art for thousands of years by many different cultures; from prehistoric times to the present. Turquoise comes in many beautiful color variations; from the popular bright solid sky-blue hues to dark blue hues with dark spiderwebbing throughout, as well as aqua, teal, and many green varieties, and even some rare white with dark spiderwebbing. The dangling portion of the necklace measures 2.40 long measured from the string to the bottom of the pendant. Closure/Clasp Type: Hook Clasp. Link Type: Beads on String. Pendant Type: Drop- Dangle Pendant. Notable Features: The necklace was handmade during the Art Nouveau era. Composed of Mediterranean coral, orange coral, and millefiori glass beads, this Moroccan Berber ethnic tribal necklace was hand strung on a black string. Berber refers to the indigenous people who lived in Northern Africa, which is now Morocco. These gorgeous ethnic pieces were created with amazing organic materials and used in tribal ceremonies or other cultural experiences. There are four types of beads that adorn this lovely necklace. The two types of coral are Mediterranean coral and orange coral. The Mediterranean coral is a bright pink with black striations, and the orange coral is a bright orange hue. The coral would have been hand sourced, carved, and polished into their bead-like shape. Despite this, the coral beads still retains some of their original shapes, adding a unique touch to this item. This necklace also features handmade millefiori glass beads. These beads are predominantly a semi-translucent deep blue with a design in the center of spotted green accents between two red bars. Interspersed amongst the coral and glass beads are spherical sterling silver plated beads. These beads have applied metal accents such as rope twist accents and wire swirls. The dangling portion of the necklace is a larger sterling silver sphere above a millefiori glass bead. The necklace has several long sterling silver plated links on either end of the beads which also hold the two sides of the hook clasp. The beads of this necklace fall on the bust and look incredible when worn. This rare and unique Moroccan Berber piece is eye-catching and has a fascinating history. Don’t miss your chance to preserve this piece of cultural world history. Damage: Age appropriate wear. This was very true due to the gorgeous designs that came out of this period. This era focused on women and the beauty of nature and the pieces were often large. Enamel was a common material used in Art Nouveau jewelry as the period was more about the importance of the design over the materials used to create it. The Art Nouveau period happened before the start of the first World War, when mass manufacturing took over production of many products, including some jewelry. Mediterranean red coral can be found growing on the sea bottom in dark crevices and cavernous spaces. It flourishes on rocky surfaces with low sedimentation. It is mostly found in the Mediterranean Sea, but has been found in the Atlantic near the Strait of Gibraltar and the Cape Verde islands. Millefiori is a glasswork technique that combines glass rods, known as murrine, to create intricate and colorful floral patterns. These flowers are only viewable after the murrine is cut into beads or discs. Millefiori means a thousand flowers in Italian and is so named because the glass is reminiscent of a field of flowers. It is believed that the ancient Egyptians first started fusing colored glass together as early as 1400 BC, with the Phoenicians and Romans producing millefiori glass in subsequent centuries. The oldest Roman millefiori beads, found by archaeologists, date from 50BC to 300AD. Millefiori glass became especially popular during the Renaissance when it was primarily associated with Venetian glassworkers. In subsequent eras the technique was lost before the style once again became popular in the 19th century. To this day it is still handmade using traditional techniques by glassworkers across the world and is highly sought after. The word garnet comes from the 14th Century Middle English word gernet meaning dark red. The word is derived from Latin granatum which means seed, and is called so because of the gemstones resemblance to the beautifully red seeds of the pomegranate. Garnet is actually the name of a group of minerals that comes in a rainbow of colors, from the deep red of the Pyrope garnet to the vibrant green of Tsavorites. Some rare garnets are even blue, colorless, ormost rare of allchange colors in different lights. But the most common color is a beautiful range of reds, from rust colored to deep violet-red. The folklore on garnet is extensive. Legend has it that the garnet can bring peace, prosperity and good health to the home. Some even called it the Gem of Faith, and its believed that to those who wear it and do good, more good will come. No matter why or how you wear garnet, this beautiful gemstone is perfect for those who share January birthdays and get to start each New Year with a sense of goodwill, happiness, and purpose. This style of jewelry was popular with Art Deco ladies and there are lots of slightly different versions as a result. This particular necklace has quite a few extra features that make it special. The elongated pendant is delicate looking, yet is large and full sized which allows for a uniquely shaped tear-drop, pink glass cabochon. Sparkling brightly, it is framed by vibrantly colored enameling. A delicate paperclip chain is original to the pendant which is another beautiful detail. This piece is fresh looking and must have been tucked away and well taken care of, or worn infrequently. The silver has a bright patina without any dents and very little surface wear. The glass has a smooth and gleaming surface without any chipping and very little scratching and the faceting is crisp and refractive. The enameling is intact with dense and vibrant color that doesnt have any chipping and very little surface wear. There are no irregularities to the setting or signs of solder or repair and the piece has a firm shape. 18 chain, 2 3/8 pendant including bale. Mark Tiny, obscured maker mark on the back of pendant. (if the piece is not marked it is tested for silver content). Antique and vintage pieces have been passed through generations, so its not often you find a piece that has be maintained in its near-original condition. Such pieces are not only higher in value, but they are also more collectible, as they carry the history of past owners but do not show it. They reveal what the piece would have looked like when it was first created, giving us an insight into a bygone era. Art Deco is one of the first truly international styles, that influenced the design of buildings, furniture, fashion and of course, jewelry. The movement was given a name from the international exposition of Arts De coratifs et Industriels Modernes, that was held in Paris in 1925 and largely dedicated to the jewelry arts. Born out of ideas of modernism and the Industrial Age, this manifested into designs that used Cubism s bold abstraction and rectilinear shapes and combined them with intricate patterning, bold color and symmetry. High-end jewelry design houses like Cartier and Boucheron set the trends in gold and gemstones, which were then emulated by costume jewelry companies in glass or perhaps plastics, and brought to the masses. Other characteristics like an elaborate pattern, unique depiction, or the use of multiple colors can add more value to an enamel piece. _gsrx_vers_837 GS 7.0.15 (837).
