Silver or Nickle plated, on brass, which is rare, so potentially from an officers Wardroom. Marked to the face: SEWILL – LIVERPOOL. Dated around 1940 – 1960, so potentially British Royal Navy, WW2 – 2WW. Good working order for age, with some wear to the plating and some superficial tarnishing, marks and scratches. 8 diameter, face diameter 6, depth 4 1/4. Designed to be inserted / embedded within a ships bulkhead cabinetry / joinery. Astral – Coventry, England – movement. Joseph Sewill was born in 1800. He set up business as a watchmaker in Duncan Street in Liverpool in 1839, moving to South Castle Street in 1845. They had an outlet in Cornhill, London which was managed by John Sewill, Joseph’s son, and eventually another branch in Glasgow managed by the younger son Frank. The company of Joseph Sewill of Liverpool was one of the most famous watch, chronometer and nautical instrument makers of 19th Century Liverpool.
