A Grand Tour was an opportunity for travelers to learn more about the art, cultures, and histories of other countries, often lasting months or years at a time. This necklace is defined by three different types of beads that are strung along the white string that holds the many strands together. There are five strands total that make up this hefty necklace, each adorned with sterling silver plated beads, resin, and faux turquoise. The faux turquoise is a lovely opaque light blue and makes up the majority of the beads in the center of the necklace. To either side of the faux turquoise beads is sterling silver plated beads, and beyond those strung carved resin beads. The resin beads are beige in color, a lovely contrast against the blue of the faux turquoise. Finally, immediately next to both sides of the clasps finishing the necklace are more sterling silver plated beads. The slider pendant is a large contoured tube. The edges of the tube are lined with applied rope twist accents and in the center of the tube is an applied rosette accent. Completing the necklace is a large, sterling silver plated hook clasp for comfortable and secure wear of this substantial piece of jewelry. This necklace has a wearable length of 26.50. When worn, this necklace falls to the top of the bust, the many strands separating slightly to highlight the grandeur of this necklace. A beautiful example of Yemeni jewelry from the Art Nouveau era, this necklace would make a valuable addition to any antique jewelry collection. Don’t miss your chance to preserve this piece of cultural history. Damage: Age appropriate wear. The beads are somewhat damaged, which is not unusual for an item of this necklace’s age. Some beads are most likely missing, revealing the string underneath. The sterling silver plating is somewhat tarnished, which adds to the character of this item. The price has been reduced to reflect this. This listing is for the item only. This was very true due to the gorgeous designs that came out of this period. This era focused on women and the beauty of nature and the pieces were often large. Enamel was a common material used in Art Nouveau jewelry as the period was more about the importance of the design over the materials used to create it. The Art Nouveau period happened before the start of the first World War, when mass manufacturing took over the production of many products, including some jewelry. The Grand Tour was the standard European vacation of the Georgian and Victorian eras. The opportunity it gave for studying culture, architecture and art made it a tradition, especially for the upper classes. The Grand Tour was popularized by the poet Lord Byron and the writer Mary Shelley, who was the author of Frankenstein. The Grand Tour was an opportunity for wealthy travelers to explore the world and experience different cultures over a 2 to 4-year period. And what better memento of this long trip than pieces of native souvenir jewelry such as Italian cameos, mosaic, and pietra dura. Pieces often had historical inspirations from the remnants of Pompeii to the pyramids of Egypt. Cultural learning was a focal point of the grand tour and the process of remembrance spilled over into jewelry souvenirs. Turquoise is found all over the world and has been a popular semi-precious stone used in jewelry and art for thousands of years by many different cultures; from prehistoric times to the present. Turquoise comes in many beautiful color variations; from the popular bright solid sky-blue hues to dark blue hues with dark spiderwebbing throughout, as well as aqua, teal, and many green varieties, and even some rare white with dark spiderwebbing.
