Composed of Mediterranean coral, orange coral, and millefiori glass beads, this Moroccan Berber ethnic tribal necklace was hand strung on a black string. Berber refers to the indigenous people who lived in Northern Africa, which is now Morocco. These gorgeous ethnic pieces were created with amazing organic materials and used in tribal ceremonies or other cultural experiences. There are four types of beads that adorn this lovely necklace. The two types of coral are Mediterranean coral and orange coral. The Mediterranean coral is a bright pink with black striations, and the orange coral is a bright orange hue. The coral would have been hand sourced, carved, and polished into their bead-like shape. Despite this, the coral beads still retains some of their original shapes, adding a unique touch to this item. This necklace also features handmade millefiori glass beads. These beads are predominantly a semi-translucent deep blue with a design in the center of spotted green accents between two red bars. Interspersed amongst the coral and glass beads are spherical sterling silver plated beads. These beads have applied metal accents such as rope twist accents and wire swirls. The dangling portion of the necklace is a larger sterling silver sphere above a millefiori glass bead. The necklace has several long sterling silver plated links on either end of the beads which also hold the two sides of the hook clasp. The beads of this necklace fall on the bust and look incredible when worn. This rare and unique Moroccan Berber piece is eye-catching and has a fascinating history. Don’t miss your chance to preserve this piece of cultural world history. Damage: Age appropriate wear. This was very true due to the gorgeous designs that came out of this period. This era focused on women and the beauty of nature and the pieces were often large. Enamel was a common material used in Art Nouveau jewelry as the period was more about the importance of the design over the materials used to create it. The Art Nouveau period happened before the start of the first World War, when mass manufacturing took over production of many products, including some jewelry. Mediterranean red coral can be found growing on the sea bottom in dark crevices and cavernous spaces. It flourishes on rocky surfaces with low sedimentation. It is mostly found in the Mediterranean Sea, but has been found in the Atlantic near the Strait of Gibraltar and the Cape Verde islands. Millefiori is a glasswork technique that combines glass rods, known as murrine, to create intricate and colorful floral patterns. These flowers are only viewable after the murrine is cut into beads or discs. Millefiori means a thousand flowers in Italian and is so named because the glass is reminiscent of a field of flowers. It is believed that the ancient Egyptians first started fusing colored glass together as early as 1400 BC, with the Phoenicians and Romans producing millefiori glass in subsequent centuries. The oldest Roman millefiori beads, found by archaeologists, date from 50BC to 300AD. Millefiori glass became especially popular during the Renaissance when it was primarily associated with Venetian glassworkers. In subsequent eras the technique was lost before the style once again became popular in the 19th century. To this day it is still handmade using traditional techniques by glassworkers across the world and is highly sought after.
